Ancient skill which unites multicoloured pieces of leather into a single composition...It is a traditional craft of Tatar people to manufacture various leather goods. Since the dawn of time leather mosaic has been applied in the production of colorful patterned boots - Ichigs by the Kazan Tatars. They were worn by men and women, children and the elderly alike. Ichigs for men were no less intricate in manufacture as the ones for women, but they were more subdued. In the 18th - 19th centuries, a unique technique for manufacturing these boots was developed in Kazan and the surrounding region, based on the Kazan stitch a special technique that is not used anywhere else in the world. The method used by Tatar shoemakers to create their footwear is rather like that used for mosaics or stained glass. First of all a complex pattern of stylised palm leaves, tulips, zig-zags and rosettes is drawn on paper, then the separate details are cut out of coloured leather, so that they fit together perfectly. And just as in a stained glass window, the masters attach the leather elements to each other using the so-called Kazan stitch, which combines extraordinary strength and astonishing decorativeness - it looks like a twisted cord or string of beads.

PERSIA YAZD single piece Silk Ikat panel. Circa: 1 PERSIA YAZD single piece Silk Ikat panel. Circa: 1950 – 1960’s. Size: 73″ X 52″ – 185 cm X 132 cm. Yazd and Kashan are the two main old towns where Silk ikats are still being woven as well as they were the center of Zoroastrian believers as eternal Zoroastrian religion fire is still on in YAZD. Kashan used to be the silk trade center in 18th – 19th centuries. Kashan also used to be famous for its silk rugs and velvet ikats. There are a few ikat weavers left in Yazd and Kashan has revival of Velvet ikats. This one is an old tradition for hanging on walls rather than using as table cover. Depiction of bursting sun in the center. Used and few tiny wear holes, much smaller than seeing on photos. It has a very light weight. Must be used for hanging and well taken care for its age. Interesting it has the graphic of three panels when it is woven as a single piece.
