Tile Panel with Sphinx. Turkey, probably Konya, Se Tile Panel with Sphinx. Turkey, probably Konya, Seljuqs of Rum period (1081-1307), late 12th - early 13th century Stonepaste; overglaze painted and gilded. Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Josephson, 1976. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Exhibition, January 2023.
In Anatolia, ceramic wall tiles, for which Ottoman architecture later became so famous, first appear in twelfth-century Konya. There, tiles like this set decorated the palace pavilion of Anatolian Seljuq sultan Qilij Arslan II (r.1156-92). Both iconographically and technically, these tiles have affinities with Iranian Seljuq ceramic traditions.
